Water births are popular because many women describe warm water as providing deep, natural pain relief during labor. Warm water helps relax muscles, reduce tension, and decrease the perception of pain.
When the body is relaxed, it releases more oxytocin, the hormone that drives labor forward. Water also helps lower adrenaline (the stress hormone), allowing contractions to become more effective and less exhausting.
The buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints and the pelvic floor, makes movement easier, and allows mothers to adopt more instinctive and comfortable positions.
Water causes the perineum to become more elastic and relaxed, reducing the incidence and severity of tearing and the need for an episiotomy and stitches.
Women also feel greater privacy and less observed, which supports physiologic birth.
